Well, I have my first St. Bernard (LH) coming in next week. The man
just got him from someone. She has been neglected. Please tell me
most Saints are nice! LOL. How much do you charge for these big
guys? Any tricks for a matted St. Bernard? I am hoping I can avoid
shaving it. thanks-Amy

This is too funny...I just have to pipe in here (I'm a member of "Lurkers
Anynomous" LOL!) I'm terrified of Turkeys!....(also spiders and Brittany
Spaniels) About 2 years ago I was grooming a client's mini-poo at her
place of work
(a big company set way out in the woods).......anywho, I get out of my van
and
look up and there's this crazy looking bird standing there not 5 feet in
front of me.....this thing must have been about 4-5 ft tall! I didn't
know what
the heck he was (I had never seen a wild
turkey....just "Butterball,
Pilgrim, Thanksgiving" turkeys) This thing was making all these threatening
noises
and flapping his wings....I scooped the mini-poo up and ran like a crazy
woman
towards the building...this turkey chased me and even caught my grooming
smock a couple of times......wouldn't ya know it...there was a whole group
of
employee's having lunch outside and laughing hysterically at the whole
scene!!

The 2 StBs I knew were nice and slow and like to lie down a lot. I used
to
shave them, but knowing what I know now, I would suggest you lather them
up
and brush while soapy, condition and repeat brushing. For pricing, charge
by your hourly rate and add something for SIZE. Just give an broad
estimate, like at least $60 (or whatever) and keep track of your time.
Don't forget there is the short hair and longer hair variety, but don't
mention that to the client. In client eyes, they are all short-haired. LOL

Can someone please help me? I have to replace the pump in the back of the
van-the one that's bolted to the floor between the shop vac and the
outside wall of the van. I have previously replaced it with another pump
that
wasn't original equipment and now **that** pump is throwing pieces of
stuff out of it that look like little pieces of black paint and it's causing
my
radiator to stop up and the van runs hot because of it. (FINALLY figured
it out-no thanks to the Ford place-THEY won't listen to me because I'm
*just** the dog lady-grrrrr!!!!!!) If you can send me the part number or a
picture so I'll have something to go by while I look, I'd sure appreciate
it!!
Thanks in advance :o)

Hi All,
I would like to make up a book of before and after pics of just "pet
trims" that I can use to show people examples and help them to decide what
they
want. I have many of the large Master Works posters that feature the
purebreds
and I use those as examples of "clean face, clean feet, skirt...etc" but am
having a difficult time finding the mixed breed personality cuts. Can
anyone
recommend any sites that I may be able to get some? I will list the site
along with the pics in the book so that the appropriate people can get
credit if they
like. Thanks.

Thanks Nora. She is Long Hair & the owner said she is matted behind
the ears & that I will have to look at the body. He just got the dog
about a week ago from someone else. I did tell him that it sounded
pricey but I would have to see the dog. I only knew one Saint & I
LOVED him. Hopefully this one will be just as nice. Her name is
Molly-surely a dog named Molly wouldn't bite right? I just do not
want to shave it-too hard on my blades & a giant pain in the rear. I
will follow your advice & try to brush her out with the shampoo &
conditioners in the coat. iSmart & refurbish & Glo Coat. He did say
she is beautiful.
One of my clients referred him & said "I was the best". That makes
me feel really good. The client who referred me has a 17 year old
blind, deaf Shih Tzu that I do in a puppy cut, so what she was
referring to was how I handle her dog. I let their daughter stay the
last time so the dog would totally relax. I never realized how much
a part of people's lives you become when you groom the elderly & sick
dogs. You feel like you are stressing over losing your own pet.
Last night, I groomed the Sheltie that has deteriorating nerve
condition. She is only about 9 & is a real trooper. Owners have had
her all over to experts. She uses a wheel cart now. Such a
sweetie. She fell asleep in the crate last night & was watching her
like she was my own! Worried about her future. (Sigh.) Dogs just
don't live long enough! Amy : )

Calm As A Cucumber
A hurricane blew across the Caribbean. It didn't take long for the
expensive yacht to be swamped by high waves, sinking without a trace.
There were only two survivors: the boat's owner, Dr. Eskin, and the
steward, Benny. Both managed to swim to the closest island. After
reaching the deserted strip of land, the steward was crying and very
upset that they would never be found. The other man was quite calm,
relaxing against a tree.
"Dr. Eskin, Dr. Eskin, how can you be so calm?" cried the
Benny. "We're going to die on this lonely island. We'll never be
discovered here!"
"Sit down and listen to what I have to say, Benny," began the
confident doctor. "Five years ago I gave the United Way $500,000. I
donated the same amounts four years ago. And, three years ago, since
I did very well in the stock market, I contributed $750,000 to each.
Last year business was good again, so the two charities each got a
million dollars."
"So what?" shouted Benny.
"Well," explained Dr. Eskin, "it's time for their annual fund drive.
They'll find me."

Subject: LipSystem
I am so grateful to Curtis for inventing the LipSystem.
My life as a groomer is so much better. On Thursday I had such a
cow of a dog on the table , he has always had to have his nails
done by a vet and we have never been able to do a complete groom on
him before. Because of the Lip System, not only did I finish his
groom, was able to do his nails.
In the overview, I don't have to continally fight with dogs to
stand anymore, neither do I have to chase the little dears around
table because they don't want their pads cleaned out.
There is far less wear and tear on my body and on my nerves.
I can't say enough wonderful things about Hanvey's LipSystem.
THANK YOU CURTIS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Regards
Brenda

Subject: Training advice
Hi Tina,
It sounds to me that Jerry is calling the shots here and both you and your
husband are inadvertently supporting his place in the hierarchy. He is
probably confused and is using the only means that he knows to get his own
way. I would be starting Obedience lessons pronto. You may not ever wish
to trial him, that
is not the point. Formal training will help you to
clearly establish who is boss in a humane way. There is absolutely no need
to
train with harsh physical methods, motivational training is the way to go.
Teach him behaviours and reward him for
doing as he is told. Clicker training
is great and he can be rewarded by both you and you and your husband for
walking nicely on a lead for example. You may not need formal heel but it
might help to break this behaviour. I would definitely train a reliable
recall to both of you. Clicker can help enormously here. Don't let him
off
lead until this is trained to the point where he will recall to either of
you when called off ANYTHING. even cats! Tough for a terrier I know LOL.
train around distractions Use a long line (30feet) so you are always in
control. You may have to go into management mode while you are away as
two weeks is probably not going to be long enough to undo a years worth of
him
getting his own way. Put a plan in place for the moment and start now
where he is totally under lead or crate control for your husbands sanity.
Just
remember that clicker training is incredibly effective if done correctly
but you must take it in small steps and TEACH what you want. Find a good
trainer in your area, check their credentials and go to it. You may even
get the training bug, especially with a dog that naturally wants to look
at you! People train for this you know LOL!!!
This is just a quick response to your question, if you need any further
information please email me privately if you wish.
Good luck
Cheers

Hi Kathy,
I love Ice on Ice and find it excellent for deshedding double coated
breeds, i.e. Goldies, Shepherds BC's etc.
Its also great for detangling. I use
it neat in a conditioning mix which is then diluted and rinsed through or
used in a spray bottle as a leave in
conditioner. I also love The Stuff which
is a simular product.
