Rescuing Rescues
Get in touch with your local breed rescues and offer a free groom to the dogs they take in.  Rescues normally don't have money to waste on professional grooming.  Work it out so you are the "official" rescue groomer.  Then provide them with a flyer describing you and your shop and how you enjoy grooming this breed.  Then offer the (people who adopt the rescued dogs) a free consultation and coat and skin evaluation and 20% off their next groom.  Most rescues will do fund raisers and set up booths at local functions.  Provide them with flyers to pass out at their booth.  You can also get some good grooming tips on that particular breed from the rescue.

Stuffed dogs to ease children whose pets are going off to be groomed.
Over the years I have seen a few children who are either visibly upset or crying because their dogs have to be left for me to groom.  I came up with a plan for these children - give them a large cuddly stuffed dog to keep while
their dog is at the groomer and which will be given back to me when their dog is returned to them.  I've only tried this once as of yet and the owner didn't remember to bring the stuffed dog back but I still think this might
be a good plan for those upset kids.

"Free First Groom For Puppy" Certificate
To existing clients that have a pregnant dog, we give out a "Free First Groom" certificate for each puppy( up to the age of 6 months), we also include a brochure giving a little information about the breed and it's required maintenance.  This can then be added to the puppies packet of goodies that go to his or her new owners.  This also helps get that new owner in the door where "mom" is groomed!

FREE Towels! More Clients!

Anyone need towels?!  I have been using a great idea!

I put a sign outside of my shop that reads "Bring in Your Old Towels and
Get $2.00 off your next grooming."  You will be surprised at how many
towels I got (you can never have too many towels). Plus it helps me get new
customers.

Cheap Towels and Bandanna Material

For towels and bandanna material, at yard sales I ask if they have any, and
I am always surprised at how many people run back in the house and bring back
bunches of towels or material.  I usually get towels for .50 each and 2 yrd
of material also for .50.  Since many groomers work Saturdays, tell your
friends who do yard sales what you're looking for.

Very Important Pooch - VIP Maintenance Program

In order to increase your income, simply offer a VIP (Very Important Pooch) Maintenance Program for your regularly scheduled dogs.  The way it works is if you have a dog who is scheduled for grooming every 6 weeks, offer that client a maintenance bath and brush out at 3 weeks for half the groom price!
So 4-week doggies come in at 2 weeks, 6-week doggies come in at 3 weeks and 8-week doggies come in at 4 weeks for maintenance.  I have done this with clients who are on a regular schedule up to 8 weeks and have increased my income very nicely to say nothing of helping to keep those long-haired dogs matt-free.

Long Hair Dog Maintenance Program

I also give a discount to the very hairy dogs......if they come in
every week to be brushed out.  I noticed that most dog owners, who don't like
to brush their dogs, (and we all know there are soooo many of them out
there!!!) jump at the chance to have their dog professionally brushed out.
I usually charge a minimal price (between $5.00 and $7.00) depending on the
dog.  The catch... they must come in once a week, without exception.  If they
miss a week and it takes me twice as long... I add to the price before I even
get started.  Less hair floating in the house and less mess for me and my
groomers when the dog comes in to be groomed.  My customers really appreciate
this service!

I am careful to pick and choose the customer that I would offer this service.
It doesn't take long and if the dog comes in every week... you catch the
matts before they get bad.

Adjust your price to your area... Some places charge as much as $15.00 for a
professional brush out.  But what ever you do... give your customer something
that they will appreciate.  I now have a following of owners with large, long hair dogs
and small long hair dogs that they want to keep in full coat.

Good luck!

Dog Pound Vouchers for Adopting Parents

I have given the local pound vouchers for a free wash & dry (or equivalent value off a full groom)to be given to the new owner of any dog that is purchased from them.
This costs me very little, gets people in for the first time, and many become regular clients. I also makes me feel good to do something for those who have
adopted an unwanted animal.

Volunteer Grooming/Coupons for the Local Shelter

I offer my local shelter free grooming on any dog that comes in really matted
or dirty. This ends up being one or two dogs a month.  The volunteer time I
spend up there allows them to see what kind of work I do and ends up making a
dog "more adoptable".  I have also printed up $5 off coupons for adopters
that they can use up to 6 months from the date of adoption.  This is a great
way to help shelters and their dogs, but it has also increased my client
base.
